About
Alan Shoesmith is a versatile Canadian guitarist, composer, arranger, songwriter, recording artist, and music educator with a career spanning over four decades. His musical journey began in the early 1970s as an avid listener, initially captivated by the hits of AM radio. By the late 1970s, his musical horizons expanded into progressive rock, jazz, fusion, classical, ambient, and electronic music, shaping his unique artistic voice.
After purchasing his first acoustic guitar at Montreal's Steve's Music Store, Alan quickly began developing his craft, blending influences from his eclectic musical interests into his own style. His early passion for sound exploration soon led him to a deep fascination with recording techniques, setting the stage for his future work in both performance and production.
Throughout the 1980s, Alan balanced formal studies in classical guitar with his burgeoning interests in improvisation, composition, songwriting, and sound recording. In 1987, he built a modest 4-track home studio, where he recorded hundreds of tracks—many of them collaborative. One notable project from this era was Dreams of Fluorescent Underbrush, a duo project that showcased his early forays into experimental music.
In the 1990s, Alan transitioned into a full-time career as a high school music educator, all while continuing to expand his collection of instruments and recording gear. His home studio evolved from analog tape to fully digital, and he created a vast catalog of recordings, some of which were made available online during the late '90s. A selection of these tracks would later appear on Rewind One (2019), a compilation of his work from that era. The '90s also saw Alan playing in various bands, including the novelty pop group Angry Shoppers and the cover band Second Avenue.
Entering the 21st century, Alan's musical focus shifted toward more collaborative efforts. He became a member of the guitar quartet Cedar & Spruce, which released two albums—Cedar & Spruce: Debut Album (2001) and Beyond 9 Mile(2006)—and performed live throughout the region.
In 2012, Alan released his first full-length album of original music, Shoesmith, Chamberlain & Cardey, marking a new phase of his creative output. This was followed by several solo releases, including Greenwood Fountain (2016), Infinite Gravity (2017), Eagle Town (2017), and With Just a Few Words (2018), showcasing his expanding range as a composer and performer.
Since 2019, Alan has focused primarily on acoustic guitar compositions, producing a series of albums that explore the depth and intimacy of the instrument. His recent works include Welcomed by the Forest (2022), Searching in Solitude(2023), and String Painter (2024), which have garnered attention for their delicate, evocative soundscapes.
In addition to his solo work, Alan remains active in a variety of side projects, each exploring different musical genres. These include Alain LaFontaine (classical guitar covers), Inner Streets (a piano/guitar duo with Mat Teofilo), Edward Blythe (solo piano interpretations), Framed by Stars (post-rock/ambient with a hint of jazz), Eyes Beyond Tiers (Lo-Fi), Airwire (jazzy guitar/sax project with Chris Nicholl) and Maple Morning(singer-songwriter).
Through his diverse musical pursuits, Alan Shoesmith continues to explore new sonic territories while maintaining a deep commitment to his artistic vision and teaching. Whether through his solo compositions, collaborative projects, or educational work, his contributions to the world of music remain enduring and inspiring.
